HISTORY

The small family business of Bob Hunter, gifted wood-carver, is in the picturesque village of Thirlby, under the Hambleton Hills in the lea of Whitestonecliffe where he has lived all his life. He works with the next two generations of his family in a converted smallholding and this is Pear Tree House.

Visitors to the home of the Wren will not be disappointed, in fact, they will find it a rewarding experience as they view the fine furniture on display, the beautiful grain of the wood enhanced by outstanding craftsmanship.

Every article they produce bears a hand-carved Wren and there is a story behind this. The Wren was often to be seen perched on the rafters of the workshop until the outer doors were finished. The birds are still a common sight in the yard, one being so bold as to build it’s nest behind a saw blade hanging on the wall where she raised two young ones. To the Hunter family, the Wrens seemed to be presiding over their activities like a lucky emblem, so they decided to let them carry on the good work in wooden form on all their products.

There is no mass production at the Home of the Wren and the wood-carvers are happy to work to the requirements and measurements of the individual customer.

Wren Cabinet Makers produce everything from tiny napkin rings to bureaus and sideboards. Also church work and any specialised work with seasoned English Oak.

With the exception of a few basic machines, all the work is done by hand and incorporates a lot of traditional hand-carving, including the use of the adze on all top surfaces, producing an age old air of elegance and grace.

These pieces can justly be termed antiques of the future.
